nixon: alongside all of the other things you do that your brother never did, you are a climber, especially fond of using your dump trucks as step ladders – you are a most determined baby.  you pulled your blankets out of your bottom drawer, then settled in for a good play – with more than a few cheeky glances over your shoulder to see if i was watching!  {i was, and yes concerned reader, he was safe from any furniture tipping}.

mumm-blogger-new-zealandethan: nothing much to say here aside from “damn we make some gorgeous boys dave jack!”  actually there is much to say, such as; may you never, ever fuss about a haircut as much as you fussed about this one and why must the best hair-cut you’ve ever had be from a kiosk in whangarei!!!!

nixon:  typically, the most attractive, exciting place for you to be is where the big boys are.  when there are blankets and pillows on the floor for rolling in, hidden dogs snuggling to discover and harass, and game controllers and remotes to obsess over, there is no place you’d rather be.  of course it helps that the bigs turned around every thirty seconds to love all over you and shower you with kisses and tickles xx

ethan:  we were housebound for the first five days of the holiday so when the sun came out we made the most of it.  i took you, your bestie and nix hiking in the waitakere ranges on sunday and we had a blast.  the recent rainfall made the waterfalls spectacularly deafening and the river was as high as we have ever seen it.  you have been such a pleasure to spend time with these holidays, it will be a very quiet house when you go back to school!

nixon: happy birthday my darling baby!  and you are still a baby, so much more so than your big brother at one and that’s just fine with me.  you had an amazing birthday, having your operation postponed meant we were all happy, relaxed and you felt great.  it was a blessing in disguise really.  you enjoyed daddy’s birthday pancakes so much i really think we should have given you a pancake stack instead of your own cake {not such a fan of cake and icing!}.  this has been hands down the best year of our lives, you have completed the jack family, created a wonderful big brother in ethan and we all just can’t stop loving and kissing on you x

ethan: we wanted you to celebrate with us and nixon on his birthday so you took the day off school and we headed to mexico for lunch.  you have always been the best kid to take to restaurants.  you love trying new food and flavours and your dad and i both really enjoy discussing recipes and critiquing dishes with you.  mexican food is our family’s firm favourite so it wasn’t too surprising that we loved our meal but it was great to see you enjoying and appreciating the experience.  plus you have the most brilliant blue eyes my boy xx

nixon: your last days of babyhood are upon us!  you walk when you feel like it, you talk all day long, you are stroppy and know what you want and you are the most delicious, happy baby we have ever known.  i am so looking forward to celebrating your first birthday this week.  where this year has gone, i can’t even fathom.

ethan: we headed to waiwera on a whim on sunday and scooped up one of your besties on the way.  we had such fun!  it was a relief to shake off our rather stringent naptime routine and just roll with the punches for a day.  you definitely appreciated having a day that didn’t revolve around your wee brother and it made me realise that it’s ok to throw routine out the window every once in a while.

ethan: you were so inspired by ben smith’s amazing tackle in the 2nd all blacks test against england that one of your favourite new pastimes is watching youtube videos of try-saving tackles.  i guess there is worse things you could be watching right?  nix just wants to watch big red car……

wpid-2014-06-25-16.05.30.jpg.jpeg

nixon: trucks, tractors and diggers.  all day.  every day. broommmm. i love it.  luckily – for you – there are many diggers working across the street from us so you can get your digger fix on a daily basis.  it’s pretty cute that one of your first words is “digg-ah”.  you are a loud chatty wee thing my darling x

nixon: such a horrible week for you, more biopsies which really knocked you around resulting in four days in starship.  your hirschprungs journey has just begun but we will be there with you every step of the way x

ethan: i love the way you look at your baby brother.  you play with him whenever you can, you have never been annoyed, short tempered or impatient with him.  i’m sure those times are ahead of us but i know your love will help him through any situation as you two grow older.  you are so lucky to have each other and the amazing thing is, i know you feel this too.  you have never forgotten how much it hurt when we lost the wee baby before nixie and that makes loving your brother all the more special.

nixon: i was about to dress you when i realised that i really needed to enjoy your baby chub more often. so we turned the heat pump on and you had a lovely play in your nappy and i went a bit snap-happy.  you are such a very scrummy baby!

ethan: june was a lucky month for me, i won two tickets to the all blacks v england at eden park so opted to let you and your dad have a boys night out.  you guys had some fast food for dinner and rode the train to town where you had a blast watching the first nail-biting test.  it was a timely treat as you received player of the day again at your own rugby game!  you are so handsome and growing so fast at the moment, that’s my kathmandu jacket you’re fitting rather nicely!

ethan: you are having a seriously good year at rugby.  you have settled into your position in the front row, finally, and are using your huge strength and power they way we knew you always could.  your school team won all three games in the first round of this years comp and look set to continue this streak into the next two rounds.

nixon: you don’t particularly enjoy the shouting and excitement of being on the sidelines at rugby so we hang out on the far side of the field where you can cheer your brother on in your own special way  – by eating all of his food and messing with the field markers!

ethan:  oh boy, hectic week!  this term you have become a ‘joiner’ at school, signing up for whatever sports team is in season as well as two choirs.  son you are one busy guy.  nix and i were stoked to watch your school soccer tournament last week, your team of rugby boys played so well and came third!  you jumped into goal after the assigned goalie bailed after letting one through and you were marvellous; saving the next goal with gusto and keeping the opposition from scoring for the rest of the match.  you scored two tries this weekend, one for your club rugby team on saturday and one for your school team at the barbarians day on sunday.  your body looks like some one has pummelled you with a meat tenderiser but you tell me that you are busy doing fun stuff, so you don’t mind.  neither do we x

wpid-2014-05-21-12.14.32.jpg.jpeg

nixon: my baby, i don’t even want to talk about your week.  we spent thursday in hospital after we were notified by phone that you had been diagnosed with hirschprungs disease.  i’m not buying it at this point, your biopsy confirmed it, but, if the biopsy was taken in the wrong place it could easily be a false-positive.  the contrast x-ray was not conclusive either way so we are waiting for the surgeons next move.  waiting sucks.  you however, are still your beautiful, cheerful, excruciatingly smart, funny and inquisitive self.  your stevie wonder dance moves crack me up boy.

nixon: your dad and i realised that our second-child-slacker affliction extended so far that you had never been on a swing! quelle horreur!  so, you and i hit the park and you swung and you slid and all you really wanted to do was to eat bark {which we can do at home fyi}.  i love you little baby.

wpid-2014-05-19-09.51.59-1.jpg.jpeg

ethan: you are constantly needing to have physical contact with nix, always picking him up, moving him around, wrestling and cuddling.  you were busy explaining all of the trinkets on the wall, insisting that a photo of nix was actually you {you were obstinately sure you were right!}.
