Summer Bedroom Refresh

Oh my lord it’s HOT!  Seriously, these temps in December are crazy, but crazy good for sure.  Being able to throw open the bedroom windows and freshen things up is so therapeutic for me.  Both of the boy’s rooms have had a big spring clean that included purchasing fresh, new linen for their beds.  Over the weekend, I finally had the time to do the same in our master bedroom.

You know those dumping grounds that ‘some’ of us have throughout the house?  I have two; one is our dining room table and the other is our bedroom.  It’s so odd that I despise clutter and mess yet the very place that should be somewhat of a peaceful sanctuary for Dave and I, has become the epicenter of chaos in our home.

Organising and decluttering our bedroom is a work in progress, so I’ll update you on that as I get to it in the future, but, as focusing on both the quality and quantity of hours spent asleep is a big priority for me heading into 2018 (thanks Fitbit lol), I decided to begin with a bed linen makeover.

Our prior duvet set was cozy, grey cotton jersey.  Lovely and snuggly and perfect for winter but it didn’t invoke any ‘light and bright” summery feelings whatsoever.  Despite my reservations (those reservations being a very sticky four-year-old and two dogs that love to sneak on the bed!) I knew I wouldn’t be happy with anything but 100% crisp white < insert sighing husband here.

I flipped the bed’s colour palette inside out, opting for grey linen sheets this season and that fresh, white goodness for the duvet cover.  Texture was also a consideration, and I’m loving how our new bed linen provides lots of depth and variation, considering the very neutral colours I chose to work with.

What do you guys think?  I’m loving how it came together.  The muted trio of white, natural and charcoal is exactly what I was looking for to draw the eye out of the room via our large windows, to the garden beyond – which is super lush and green right now.

That’s the fun part over, now to declutter, cull and organize!

Shop: Your dream sunglasses and where to find them

I’ve noticed over the years that people generally fall into two very distinct camps when it comes to sunglass purchasing.

The first crew use and abuse their glasses, preferring quantity over quality as they just can’t seem to hold on to a pair (or keep them in one piece!) for longer than 2 weeks.

The second camp, totally me, considers sunglasses an essential, non-negotiable part of leaving the house.  My Sunnies are
on every day, throughout every season, and absolutely every single time I get behind the wheel during the day.

As such, I’m happy to invest in a hero-pair each summer as I know they’ll go the distance – and I can trust myself to NOT lose them and NOT break them.

Hopefully lol.

This season, www.smartbuyglasses.co.nz reached out to me and invited me to try their service.  Initially overwhelmed by the unparalleled range (7234 pairs of women’s sunglasses!!!) I began using the seriously good search filter to narrow the results down to the shape, frame type and brands that I love.  It was like a Tinder for sunglasses that actually works lol.

With 319 contenders to choose from, not an easy task when the brands are Prada, Burberry, Kenzo, Tom Ford to name a few, I finally found my perfect sunglass match;

My order arrived within 5 days guys!  Perfect timing for all the travelling we are doing at the moment.  Offering free shipping and 100 day returns plus prescription and contact lens sales, I can’t imagine shopping anywhere else for glasses.

Totally happy to recommend www.smartbuyglasses.co.nz 10/10 service and quality.

Why I Love My Unstoppable Mum Life

5.40am  Subconsciously doing backflips because at the very least I won’t be waking up in the death hour of any time beginning with 4.

5.41am  Little hands slapping on my face.  “Mummay what’s inside woodlice?”.

  • Inward groan and realisation that I’m going to have to actually dissect some woodlice so he’ll quit asking me this same question every day.

5.42am  Drift off pondering where one finds woodlice in our neighbourhood.

5.43am  “Mummay I have poops”.

  • Yes, motherhood gave me spidey-senses, I can smell them, I’m acutely aware of the poops in your diaper Nixie.

Silence.

5.51am  “There’s poops on my fingers and DADDY, where’s my breakfast?”

Repeat 7 days a week except for those days that start at 4.40am, Nixon’s other favourite wake-up time.
Ethan was away on school camp this week so there was one less mouth to feed and lunch to make at 6am, but otherwise it was business as usual; the kindy run, work, housework, washing, life admin (I saved $300 per year on just one vehicle’s insurance today!  BAM!), I ran 5km, had a playdate, spent 3 hours at the rugby club facilitating registrations and I have a deadline tomorrow so am still working.

New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Winter Boots Ziera

I can’t remember the last time I actually thought to myself “That’s not going to happen, there aren’t enough hours in the day, there isn’t enough coffee, I haven’t had enough sleep, I just can’t do it”.

Can’t isn’t really in my Mummy Lexicon unless we talking about running 10km in which case I’m totally stuck in a 5km rut and I CAN’T run through it lol.  Doing ALL the things (whether we want to or not) is how many of us survive and thrive.  Limitations of what it was possible to achieve in a day flew out the window as soon as Ethan was born, and though, I undoubtedly would like a few more blank spaces on our family calendar, the last 12 years have taught me that everything and anything is possible and I can, in fact put one foot in front of the other (over and over again) and make it all work.

The catch-phrase of the moment, particularly applicable to Mums, is ‘self-care’.  I’m not good at this.  Giving myself a ‘break’ and letting the washing or the dishes pile-up does my head-in and any benefit to be gained from relaxing and not doing chores is instantly negated by mess-induced anxiety.  For people like me, who are active-relaxers, a run or an exercise class is a perfect way to take some time out and practice some of that self-care we hear so much about without the associated guilt of “doing nothing”.  Finding a way to take care of your Unstoppable Mum-Self and recharging your batteries is so important, but we all do this in different ways so if you’re not a zen yoga goddess every Sunday morning don’t sweat it, just find your own mummy-mantra and practice it.  Regularly!

My kids are the ones that drive my Unstoppable Mum Life, they are the sole reason why Dave and I can get out of bed at 4.40am with something resembling a smile and look forward to the day’s routine, domestic schedule.  Each day will undoubtedly be similar to the day before and will recognise tomorrow but it needn’t be mundane or boring.

As I am undoubtedly a YES person, the people I meet through throwing myself into MumLife and Yessing my way through the weeks, are the ones that remove any smidgen of boring-ness from the sometimes  l o n g  days – and equally long nights…..with Nixon!  Getting out and about in your community, doing, volunteering, meeting and helping other parents have a better day will give you more and more positive momentum and help you become the Mum you really want to be.

I recently discovered a little message on the sole of a new pair of winter boots from Ziera;

Stand your ground”.

I love little details like this! I’m picturing myself on a dark, cold night at the rugby club, waiting for Ethan to finish training, dealing with the minutiae of rugby committee life, my mental to-do-list rapidly overflowing as I remember (not to forget!) that it’s bike day at kindy tomorrow and that Ethan needs money for his school bus card so we can’t go straight home after training, that the truck’s RUC’s have run out and I still need to get the tyres balanced……..

Breathe.  Smile.  I am unstoppable.

Do something amazing today!

We’re ALL unstoppable right?  Here’s your chance to recognise a woman that inspires, empowers and motivates you every day……..with a little help from Ziera!

New Season Updates your Wardrobe will LOVE

Poor New Zealand has undoubtedly had one of the craziest summers in recent memory.  It’s been warm yes, but mostly accompanied by rain and humidity resulting in more bad-hair-days than beach days!  The one *upside* of our punishing summer is that we can start incorporating New Season fashion goodness into our wardrobes a little earlier than normal.

Checking out the latest women’s ranges from The Warehouse each season has become somewhat of a regular editorial piece here on the blog.  I found some amazing separates in the Summer 16/17 collection so am super excited to be back with a curated look at some of my top picks in stores and online now!

As Kiwi Mums, our fashion requirements are not over-the-top but we do love it when retailers get it right across the board.  When I’m shopping I have certain key considerations in mind;

  • Functionality + Style – I like to dress with at least a passing nod to what’s trending but I’ve got to be able to actually be a ‘mum’ in what I’m wearing!
  • Price – I can be a bit fickle sometimes plus the budget’s not there for me to shop as a hobby lol.  I don’t want to feel guilty after picking up something new for myself.
  • Convenience – If it’s too hard it’s not going to happen!  I don’t want to have to pack a cut lunch and a compass to go shopping for a new top.  Easy is good and works when I’m juggling kids and family obligations.

The Warehouse have nailed the brief this season and delivered some great pieces, that work beautifully together.

Pro-Tip:  Shop across the various ranges to put together a fresh, new look for the season ahead.

Homewares – New Season Dining Refresh

Dave and I have recently realised that our home-owners enthusiasm for pfaffing, improvements and once effervescent tszuj-ing has pretty much plateaued into nothingness.

A visit last week from Jade Turner, Lead Designer at The Warehouse, got me totally pumped about homewares again and showed me how little, inexpensive touches can make a big difference.

This season, think matte black, mixing organic elements with harder silhouettes and geometrics.

Enough about that, the pics will do ALL the talking x

Fashion and Kids – How to have both

I emerged from the 12 month yoga-pant haze that followed Nixon’s birth with a desire to once again wear more structured, non-stretchy clothes.  Clothes of varying fabrics, maybe a skirt or EVEN A DRESS (post-breastfeeding!)  Clothes that didn’t have to do double duty as a burp cloth and a handkerchief.

The problem was, at this point I completely lost what little of my own style I once had, and my ‘new’ post-baby wardrobe became a predictable array of Bassike-inspired stripes and monochrome separates.  Pair anything and everything with a pair of Nike Roshe and I was out the door!

It’s only in the past month (with Nix now 3!) that I realised how bored I had become with the way I was dressing and vowed to get my groove back.  With two international retailers H&M and Zara opening here in Auckland this month I shopped brights, statement pieces, sparkles and funky separates.  I purchased clothes that I will love to wear, not necessarily clothes that I loved seeing everyone else on IG wearing.

Because I don’t shop for new clothes each week I do take good care of what I have.  There is nothing more upsetting (for me or the boys) than a new shirt being on the receiving end of a greasy-paw, toddler snug fest – as lovely as those are of course! There have been many kid-wardrobe mishaps over the years, but as my laundry experience has broadened (i.e. I’ve gotten older and older lol) I’ve settled on 5 sure-fire ways to reduce stain-angst.

5 Ways I Keep my Mum-Wardrobe looking Great

  1. Take your clothes off.  Literally, if you’re wearing something you love make sure the first thing you do upon re-entry to the kid-zone – i.e. your house – is to take it off, hang it up or put it safely in the laundry.
  2. Never be unprepared, kid-tastrophes can happen at any time.  Make sure your laundry is stocked with Sard Power Stain Remover – super-heroes in either powder or spray form.  These two products are totally your new laundry allies.
  3. Re-discover your iron.  Ironing may be de rigueur to some of you but I’ve just emerged from 6 years of zero ironing.  A quick 1-2 with the iron can make even a wash-faded tee look fashion forward with the right styling.
  4. Move fast.  Your best defence against a stubborn stain is time, plus it reduces the amount of actual work you will need to put into the stain removal process.  Get it treated and/or soaking before too much time has passed and if soaking give it at least 2 hours (preferably overnight) for Sard Power Stain Remover soaker to work its magic.
  5. Be aware of your fabric choices.  Clothes can be washed relatively easily but they can be much more difficult to repair.  Delicate fabrics and I just don’t mix so I steer clear of floaty tulles, fine silk, voile, lace and ALL pantyhose as a rule.

Because I actually know nothing about fashion compared to some, I’ve called in the Most Stylish Mum I know to offer some legit advice on how to be fashionable and have kids!  Megan Robinson is both the beauty and brains behind NZ Fashion Institution www.threadnz.com and is a mother of two. (click to enlarge)
New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Stain Removal FashionIs the proof in the pudding? YES, I did actually give the Sard Power Stain Remover duo a test run and…………..Dave and I are totally speechless as to the results.  It’s become one of those totally boring parental conversations like “did Nixon poo this morning?” but now we have “I can’t believe Sard got that beetroot stain out!”.

Stains are the badges of honour your family accumulates as you move through your domestic days, months and years and I just smashed strawberry, chocolate, an almighty beetroot stain, tomato sauce and grass stains in one wash cycle.New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Stain Removal FashionNix and I ‘carefully’ applied our stains then sprayed each with Sard Power Stain Remover spray and let it sit for an hour.  I washed on a normal cycle with other laundry using 1 cap of Sard Power Stain Remover soaker – NOT holding my breath that this white shirt would live to ride another day.

Narrowly avoided heart-attack when shirt appeared 50 minutes later looking as pure as the driven snow.

Pick up your own Sard superheroes in the laundry aisle and don’t be afraid to try this at home!

Summer ‘16 – Beach Boho vs Busy Chic

“boho

New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Summer mum Fashion

Mum’s are the undisputed multi-tasking masters.  Our innate ability to switch roles, tasks, expectations and juggle kids, work and life is what helps keep things moving on the home-front, and keeps us in front of the coffee machine every morning!

Summer comes with both it’s styling pro’s and con’s; less required layers means outfit components are minimised but, it can be so hot that it’s tempting to schlep it in a tank/shorts/jandals combo everyday!

Our clothes need to be as hardworking but as flexible as we are so I’ve created two capsule wardrobes for the Summer ‘16 season which can take us busy mums from beaching with the kids to Friday Wine-downs without batting an eyelid (or breaking the bank!)

I *shopped* both of these looks online at The Warehouse and will be heading in-store next week to pick up some of my fave pieces to show you in my Summer Fashion vlog post.  What I’ve tried to do with Beach Boho and Busy Chic is to use complementary palettes so you easily mix’n match pieces from each look.  Halve your investment and double your outfits ladies!New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Summer mum Fashion

Beach Boho is definitely a seasonal trend, albeit one that is forever reappearing and reinventing itself.  Think loose, flowing separates that are just perfect for casual, unfussy days.  But, just picture that blush maxi skirt with a chic black tank and you’re ready for date night.  Too easy!

Busy Chic is my go-to look whenever I have to leave the house with the assumption that I’m going to have to interact with another adult lol.  Slightly more structured than Boho, you *may* need to use your iron on some of these pieces to keep this look polished and put-together, don’t be scared!  I LOVE the Knot Skirt in this look and shirt dresses are everywhere this season so The Warehouse is nailing summer trends at some amaze prices.

Step up your Mum Uniform – Summer Style from Ziera + Win a pair for yourself!

New Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Nivea Sunscreen review

With each new season comes an opportunity for a bit of a stock-take in both our lives and our wardrobes.  Compared to other areas in my home where I can be ruthlessly brutal during a ‘culling season’, I do tend to hoard a wee bit when it comes to my wardrobe – for good reason though.  I still have my original Levi’s denim jacket from my uni days 20 years ago and because I purchased a classic wash, it still looks great especially now it’s authentically vintage lol.

This summer I’m getting rid of that which I do not LOVE – à la Marie Kondo, and adding more classic pieces to my wardrobe, styles which will endure and stand the test of time.

A (very exciting) addition to my summer wardrobe is my first pair of shoes from Ziera.

Metallics are a huge trend in footwear for the second summer in a row and this year I’m totally onboard!  The Lido was my first choice due to it’s classic styling and on-point silver finish, plus, a loafer is a versatile trans-seasonal shoe you can wear year round with jeans, trousers, skirts and shorts – that’s pretty much got New Zealand covered for spring and summer right?

3 Reasons to upstyle your Mum Uniform with ZieraNew Zealand's Top Mummy Blogger Parenting Travel Blog Family Nivea Sunscreen review

  1. Cost per Wear – There are certain things in particular that I’m happy to spend a little more money on when I’m shopping for myself or the family; sunglasses, purses and shoes.  My reasoning for this is that I wear/use each of these three things every day and quality options will last many seasons, easily bringing down the CPW (cost per wear) for each – (this is important financial terminology to note if you’re lobbying your significant other for a new pair of kicks!)
  2. Flexible Styling – Choosing the right accessories and footwear can also make or break an outfit or breathe new life into one past it’s prime – both great things to have up your sleeve when you’re living on Mum-Time and a family-friendly budget.
  3. Expand your comfort zone – When you never sit down….. (because #MumLife), good shoes are an investment you’ll never regret.  Here’s a secret though, it is possible to find comfortable shoes that are NOT Chuck Taylors :::::::gasp!::::::  I know this because I have seen it with my own eyes – the comfy, stylish shoes live at Ziera.

Now you know.
