Sweet Little Notes & Deciduous Teeth

Sweet Little Notes & Deciduous Teeth

Sometimes it’s too easy to look at my son and marvel at how he has grown into such a big boy {mostly because he is massive!}, how he is so independent and capable and smart but then out of the blue he surprises us with something so sweet and indicative of a seven year old that we suddenly remember how young and needing of us he still is. This is a nice feeling that I fear know will become more and more rare.

Ethan grew his wee ‘special‘ tooth quite early.  It looked like a regular tooth that had simply split in the middle.  Try and imagine my panic at the thought of a child with dental issues; we were living in San Diego at the time with NO health insurance in the land of user pays.  Scary.

Turns out it wasn’t a split tooth it was an extra tooth.  A lovely little mutant extra tooth. He has treasured his special little tooth as have we.  But he has been growing.  And growing and his teeth have been falling out like autumn leaves.

Last week we said goodbye to his extra tooth  (and it’s conjoined twin next door surprisingly).  As this wasn’t just any tooth E felt it warranted special consideration from the tooth fairy and I wholeheartedly agreed.

My Little Minder

My Little Minder

Ethan is quite convinced that I am unable to make my way through the world without his assistance.  Lord knows how he thinks I manage at work, where I have keys to the building and have to drive a company car and TALK TO STRANGERS {to be fair, I’m not sure how I handle these things some days either}.

I’m pretty sure he views me as the Brittany Spears of Mothers, apt to make huge social faux pas’ like flash my bits in the swimmg pool parking lot, or get busted shop lifting nail polish at Four Square or something.  Despite his reservations, most days I am able to keep my shit together without his help, but he likes to remind me of things.  Often.

  • On Monday.  “Mum have you got my swimming bag?”.  Ethan has been swimming for seven years now.  I have forgotten his swimming bag ONCE.  He will never forget.
  • “Mama……you better close that door!”.  The second hand dog decided yesterday morning that before work/school was definately the optimal time to jump the fence and head down the road to the pub (I’m serious, that’s where he went).
  • “Mama have you got your wallet?”.  I went to Pak ‘n Save ONCE without my wallet.  Master was not amused.
  • “Mama, are you speeding???”.  Maybe….
  • “Mama do you drink anything that doesn’t come out of a can?”.  Of course I do, wine doesn’t come in a can!
  • “Mama have you locked the doors?”.  Yes, but not the windows.  I need them open to climb back in to get my keys that I locked in there.

I try not to giggle at him but some times his bossy little old man ways are hilarious.  Do any of you have little worry-worts at home? How do they keep you on the straight and narrow, I’d love to know!

A Weather Bomb

One Saturday a mighty Weather Bomb was ‘supposed’ to hit Auckland.  In fact the Weather Bomb was SO big the whole North Island was under a gale warning.  Oh my!

I was quite sure that there would be nothing better to do during a Weather Bomb than to watch movies together and bake yummy treats.  Ethan agreed, though it wasn’t us he wanted to watch movies with.  So off he went, cookies in hand, to a movie date with his wee mates.  I finally got a chance to use my new cookie cutters Mum found for me though!

Louie glues himself to the kitchen floor as soon as one of us pulls the flour from the pantry.  Damn if that crazy dog doesn’t love baked goods more than meat.

In lieu of twiddling our thumbs, we dusted off some errands, found the perfect frame for my Anthony Maxey print {which I will wait to frame and hang in our new house!!!!};

….and we enjoyed a few sneaky beers FOR FREE courtesy of our wonderful 95Bfm Bcards {get yours here}, Hallertau those shocking ribs in January have almost been forgiven : ).

We eventually returned home and Dave whipped up the most amazing pesto from basil growing on our windowsill, cashews, Parmesan, black pepper and evoo.  Can’t get enough;

I cooked a rib roast, snapped an amaze sunset, got so angry when stupid people made my Mama cry and sorted it all out.  Wine anyone?

From Paisley Jade | Things I’m Loving

button2I love Paisley Jade’s Blog.  It’s pretty, all about family and she is always cooking or DIYing something awesome.  This weekly reminder to be thankful for all the little things around us is hosted by her – so visit!

  • I am definitely loving the Apple Cards App, available from the App Store here.  I had forgotten to send a birthday card to the USA, remembered late last night and was able to order a personalized card and get it on its way for NZD$6.49 including postage!  Love it.

  •  Ethan and I are bonkers over Smoked Salmon Pate.  I bet he would eat it spread on Weet-Bix if I offered it to him.  Hold on ……..
  • My new Kikki K notebook is so cute, lucky it is plastic coated as I carry it with me everywhere I go – just in case inspiration hits! I mostly use it for jotting down ideas for The Best Nest blog posts.

  • I am loving My Food at the moment.  Paleo has totally worked for me, and with a few adjustments to cater for my cheese-fiending I have been carb/gluten free for 4 months now and have lost over half of my goal weight!  Yay me

  • Ethan found this Huhu grub on the grass and really enjoyed looking at it.  I really enjoyed watching him enjoy watching the bug.  Ahhh Summer nights outside are the best!

  • my favorite picture this week.  Dave and Ethan making lots of time for cuddles xxxx

Sunday Funday…. but it’s Monday

Happy Waitangi Day!  I bet I had more fun this weekend than John Key, stupid asset seller.

Anywho, we did lots of fun stuff today.  I can’t get enough of our little family at the moment although Ethan is a little harder to convince!

  • We had Ethan’s all time favourite lunch,

  • We went Strawberry picking.  3 kilos later{that’s 3 kilos in the bucket, not in the bellies!}

  • We went shopping for the perfect cookie cutters, which I was able to find… but not round.  Scalloped square cookies it is!

  • We cooked the lunch box treats for the week; cornbead muffin dogs {recipe to come} & hokey-pokey / strawberry cookies

  • and we finished it all of with Super Bowl Monday Hot Wings and celery with RANCH DRESSING.  Oh lord.  Couldn’t believe how good it was!  Tara Lichti you is smart, you is kind….

……and now….we sleep!  Hope your long weekend was lovely too x

Life Lately | IPhone Snaps

  1. Our old coffee table needed to go, so Nana, Ethan & I went on a mission to Danske Mobler (sp?) to get a new one, or the exact same one as Mum’s.  Sorry for stealing your decor Mum!
  2. Scooby Doo is the new game de jour.  Or month.
  3. Dave’s delish Breakfast Casserole
  4. Wax on wax off – new eyebrow spot in the mall 10 dollar!  Thanks Kyla
  5. Sometimes in summer, we get sun
  6. Te Boys watching the Sevens at The Riverhead
  7. Fat, lazy Fur Boys
Quiet.

Quiet.

One of my {small} goals for this year is to master the 6am wake-up. I am never late in the mornings but a crazy rush out of the house often involving multiple re-entries to retrieve locked-in dogs/keys/phone etc is not a graceful way to start the day.

So, as I return back to work this morning after a long weekend I did it! I got up early, showered, dressed, MADE MY BED, got breakfast ready for E, packed my lunch ………. all the while creeping around because Ethan is still asleep. 8.17am and E is snoring his head off.

So I will now back the truck out, load up and throw his breakfast in a tupperware while he sleeps and exit in a whirlwind once he wakes.

The lesson here is that even the best made plans are laid to waste in the wake of a sleeping child!

Summer Overload

The last day of my holiday is here and my camera roll is positively bursting with gorgeous memories I can’t wait to share. We have had so much fun with Tara over the last two weeks I may need another holiday to recover!
