90 Mile Beach

90 Mile Beach

The one slightly dodgy day on our holiday was the perfect day to head west to The Big Beach.  Ethan was all about the tua tua’s and was positive he would love them – he didn’t.  Luckily we ‘tagged and released’ most of them and

First Day of Kindy 2009

First Day of Kindy 2009

After much delay due to the prolonged renovations, today was the day.  Ethan was so excited and positive.  He helped pack his lunch and make muffins and pretty much couldn’t wait for Dave and I to leave him there!

Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes

Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes

After the Cape, Jack Family Tours moved on to the Giant sand Dunes and introduced Tara to the joys of getting sand-blasted whilst sliding down a massive hill on your belly.  SO MUCH FUN!  Ethan was all about it this year and even climbed to the top of so-called Psycho-Hill and bombed it with Dave.

The Cape

The Cape

Hot, sunny and deserted was how we found Cape Reinga on the day we drove up.  Tara handled the 21kms of dodgy gravel road like a trooper, and was rewarded with such a stunning view.  I don’t think I will ever tire of looking at

Ethanism

Ethanism

Today whilst perusing the meat cabinet in Foodtown, a butcher walked past Ethan and I.  Ethan turned and checked him out, turned to me and said “Momma, that man is a meat technician”.  As the shoppers around us giggled and then stared (pics to follow) I said, “yes son, he is a meat technician”.  I was actually yelling in my head ‘WTF, WHERE DOES HE GET THIS FROM??’

His new obsession is tattoos, and with the help of his markers he has been practising on himself for two days now (again I am yelling in my head the above statement, although I can totally relate this time);

Hunting & Gathering

Hunting & Gathering

Dave did a great job feeding us while we were away.  He got up at 6.30am and headed out every morning and some afternoons.  The result kept us eating snapper for dinner every night and snapper for lunch every day except one.  Cold snapper wraps

The New Locale

The New Locale

After Paihia we headed up north to the goodness.  The big peninsula where the sun always shines (it seems) and the fish always bite (touch wood).   Day 1:  The south side of Matai Bay, yeah there were boats, but there were NO people, we

Summer Holiday!!!!!!

Summer Holiday!!!!!!

I had two BIG summer school assignments to complete and submit before we could leave on our trip and show Tara (our first visitor from the states) around the upper North Island.  So in a mad flurry the night before we left, I got them done and Tara proofread for me.  I thought they sucked, I was writing just to get them finished, but I have received one grade back already – a cool 80%.  I can live with that!

So we headed to The Bay of Island’s first and set up camp in Paihia’s Haruru Falls Holiday resort.  Great facilities, lovely pool, but NO recycling.  Uck, so we had to take all of our recycling with us as I just could not put it in the trash.  So not cool, we won’t be staying there again.  The falls were lovely, as was motoring up the estuary in the new boat!!!  What luxury, the new outboard started first pull every time, thanks Dad!

The boys dropped Tara and I off on a deserted beach on one of the islands in the bay and they headed off for a spot of fishing and exploring for the day.

Tara was well prepped for what lay ahead!

Snapper!!!

Snapper!!!

Dave and Nick had a primo after work session last night and returned home with the cooler full of snapper!  Go the soft bait, Dave reckons he is NEVER fishing with a pilly again! This was definitely Dave’s best catch to date!
