Daily Look | Winter is Coming

I snapped this photo four days ago.  Just looking at it makes me shiver under my woollen jumper, full length tights, fuzzy socks and nana blanket.  Dave has started prepping a section of our yard for a wee makeover.  It’s going to require a digger

Oh Bubbydo. You make everything just that little bit more exciting. ‘I help it’ is keeping us on our toes these days. You’re everywhere at once. Waiting for us to let our guard down and leave eggs on the bench unattended. You are an opportunist

Giveaway | School Holiday Fun at The Bruce Mason Theatre with Mrs McGinty’s Garden

Get the kids out of the house and into Mrs McGinty’s garden this April school holidays.

Mrs McGinty is known around the neighbourhood for being a grumpy old lady, but deep down she longs for friends. So when the kids next door get bored during their school holidays, Mrs McGinty is the perfect target to play pranks on – you will always get a rise out of her. They spend the summer shooting arrows in her cabbages, hiding rocks in her letterbox and coming up with new tricks to drive her crazy.

But all that is about to change when Mrs McGinty grows a plant in her garden that just keeps growing and growing. Overnight, Mrs McGinty goes from being known as cranky to the talk of the town.Mrs McGinty and the Bizarre Plant was a finalist of NZ Children’s Book of the Year, 1982, and has gone on to bea New Zealand favourite for children 4 to 12 years old. The story is brought to life from the page to the stage with the use of fabulous sets, clever puppetry and great songs composed by Luke Di Somma (Chief Conductor of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra, Artistic Director Christchurch Pops Choir). The fantastic set features iconic New Zealand architecture such as a 1950s bungalow and the classic Edmond’s Sure to Rise factory sign.

Don’t miss this wonderful children’s story and visual feast at the Bruce Mason Centre for six shows only.

Toddler Swimming Lessons | The Great Equaliser

Toddler Swimming Lessons | The Great Equaliser

In true second child fashion, Nixon began swimming lessons last week at the ‘advanced’ age of 19 months.  Ethan on the other hand, had his swimming debut at 3 months and has never stopped – 10 years of swimming $!$ Dave and I were in

This day. These hours.

This day. These hours.

I have been selfishly pining for this day all week. I have; silence light rain an empty house and holy shit does it feel good. Dave spent the week working in Wellington and upon his return yesterday, Nixon gave him a cursory glance and a

This is what I think about that.

This is what I think about that.

  • I think that the first recycling pickup after the holiday period is just the best feeling ever – all of that paper and wrapping and cardboard gone! I love it.
  • I think that getting rid of my Christmas manicure which looked so cute pre-santa and looked so Fran Drescher post-santa was $30 very, very well spent.  Also no new manicure as per previous ‘saving money’ post – sad face.
  • I think that having a 2.4 metre Great White Shark, the apex predator of the entire ocean, cruising in the Auckland Harbour is seriously amazing. I wish I could see it for myself.
  • I think that Spotify is just about the best thing ever!  I switched my Spark plan to one that comes with a free Spotify premium membership and my running playlist has never sounded so good, I can see how a little tweaking and playing on the app will create {eventually} The Greatest Melissa Playlist of ALL Time.  Excite.
  • I think that American Horror Story is just about the most freaky show/movie I’ve ever seen and Dave and I have only watched Episode 1!  Holy shit-balls.  Not sure how far we will get into that series.
  • I think that I’m finally getting my reading mojo back, I’ve got The Kiterunner on my Kindle at the moment and I’m hooked.
  • I think that forgetting to buy a school pool key this summer is just about the most stupid thing I’ve done in a while.  Melting.
  • I think that some people need to get off their asses/couches and get outside/take their kids outside and enjoy themselves. Man the moaning gets tiresome <did i just say that?  Look, it’s amazingly beautiful when you leave your driveway!  This is as good as it gets weather-wise in New Zealand right now and wow, it’s a stunner of a summer!

Christmas Gift Guide | Gorgeous Wooden Toys Kids will LOVE!

Christmas Gift Guide | Gorgeous Wooden Toys Kids will LOVE!

Christmas shopping for little ones is my absolute fave, especially if you shop a little further afield than your local department store – and by further afield I totally mean mean online shopping not actually driving further away that would be ludicrous!  If you are

The Boy/Girl Conundrum

The Boy/Girl Conundrum

Before finishing off Nixie’s Christmas Shopping yesterday, I was enjoying a bit of downtime getting my nails done and chatting away to the nail tech.  We were {of course} discussing our kids and their Christmas wish lists.  She was so sad to hear that I

The Pain of Teething

The Pain of Teething

This post is sponsored by Nurofen for Children.

Nixon has had to deal with more pain in his short life than I can even imagine.  Before his diagnosis with Hirschprungs Disease, the first year of his life must have been so uncomfortable.  His inability to poop on his own meant that there was always some procedure or other we had to put him through which was pretty awful for him and us both.  He’s had doctors rummaging around in his abdomen on multiple occasions, removing the bits of his large intestine that didn’t work, replumbing him and then recovering from the whole ordeal, which took six hours in the operating room! {you can catch up on Nixon’s Hirschsprungs journey here and here}.  It almost seems cruel that after such an unusual and difficult start to life our little trooper would be hit so hard by teething pain.  Our happy-go-lucky baby was seemingly transformed overnight into a miserable, clingy, super needy little ball of tears – after a couple of days and sleepless nights I was feeling much the same way!  I knew it was teeth, he had all of the classic signs {check teething symptoms} and the only thing providing short term, temporary relief was breast-feeding.

After Nix was taken off the opiates post-op, Nurofen was prescribed to manage his pain.  I find personally that Ibuprofen is more effective than paracetamol and I can see that the same is true for Nixon, he coped beautifully at home and we were able to keep him comfortable without too much trouble.  I medicate the kids so sparingly that sometimes I have to be reminded to do it, luckily my Mum was on hand when Nix was really beginning to struggle with his teeth and reminded me to “get that boy some medicine!”.  We fully use natural remedies when we can, I love Nixie’s amber beads, I do believe they have helped so much with his pain but some days the rumbling in his gums has just been too acute to let him suffer through.

Thankfully we are in a teething lull at the moment, but those big molars will be on the move in the next few months so we are prepared!

Christmas Gift Guide | All the Beautiful Books!

Christmas Gift Guide | All the Beautiful Books!

My Christmas shopping is progressing surprisingly well this year.  I hate rush-shopping so have been steadily ticking items off my list for the past few months.  The kids gifts are a different story however.  The only presents locked in and ordered so far are books.  And that
