Saturday Love

Ahhh. I’m writing this on a quick respite from our big trade show. 12 day work stretch…….the hard work will be over tomorrow though!

Viaduct tram

Loving this scene at the viaduct yesterday morning.  Some smart tourist had parked their whopping great camper with it’s back end hanging out over the tram tracks.  Just what downtown Auckland needs on the morning of a huge trade show, a tram traffic jam!

Auckland Viaduct

Loving having a moment to enjoy Auckland’s beautiful waterfront.

More backyard fishing

Ethan’s lifelong passion for fishing is in full swing at the moment.  Loving catching little glimpses of him in full narrative,  engrossed in his inner wildlife tv series.

Albino Catfish

Of course the fish obsession requires us to visit at least one pet store per week and plan his future tropical fish tank.

Loving the troll series of stickers that are popping up all over the place at the moment.  How true is this one?

I love wetas.  Oddly they do not bother me at all compared to my near-paralytic fear of cockroaches.  We found this beautiful guy on our gate and after a quick inspection Ethan released him onto a big tree in the yard.

Dave Jack Does Paris

Another update from Dave, love this one!

Hello my beautiful wife,

Well after I got done talking to you this morning I packed my bag and made a plan. The plan was to go to see Jim Morrison’s grave and then make my way back to the hotel on foot and I should see a lot more this way. I found the nearest train station and started to buy my ticket across town, I must have looked like a pro because a lady tapped me on the shoulder and asked me for help on buying the right ticket! I pretended to not speak English and helped her buy the right ticket, I got a real big kick out of this ha ha! So after I pretended to be French I jumped on the train and headed to see good old Jim. Got there and made it to the grave site in minutes, standing there at his grave I had this funny feeling something is not right, then it hit me, here’s a dead rock star and I don’t have a beer in my hand. So always paying attention to my surroundings I remembered there was a grocery store about a block down the street. I ran down down the street and grabbed a beer and a sandwich, if you notice in the picture I grabbed the one that had the NZ name export 33 just had to represent. So back at Jimbo’s grave drinking my beer and taking it all in, not very peaceful as there are tons and tons of people walking by every minute, but still really cool. As the beer kicks in and I think to my self “Dave you are going to jump this fence and get a picture standing next to the grave”. So now I have a mission, like clock work this guy stand beside me and asks me to take a picture of him and his girl, I do then I hand him my camera and say your turn. As soon as he grabs the camera I turn around and jump the fence the crowd of people go ahh, I run up to the grave turn around and give him the thumbs up! The picture does not look the greatest but hey I touched Jimbo’s grave!! So I got that out of my system looked at some other famous dead people then I was out. Heading to see Notre Dame and what ever else I run into. I see a lot of cool things along the way and I try to eat as much as I can too. So get to Notre Dame and it’s pretty amazing. From the direction I walked I saw the back first, I crossed the bridge and headed around to the front. There was this cool place to take a picture of it from the side, so I walked up and proceeded to take a picture. It could of been my beer buzz but I did not see the top model crew setting up to take pictures of some chick. I was standing with a lot of other people taking pictures then these girls asked us if we could move. I started laughing and told the chick that they would have to wait to shoot there new postcard as this was a public place. The photographer heard me and man did he go wild ha ha ha I guess he was not making a postcard, yes I am a dick. So I moved on, bought a lot of gifts for the team along the way. Crossing the bridge to the Louvre I bought a lock and locked on the bridge, it says Dave +Melissa and like us it is not going anywhere, so when we make it back to France I will show you. So the outside of the Louvre is crazy, it’s getting late so I find the entrance and charge it. I go down the the stairs and right when I get to the ticket booth the lady puts the close sign up…fuck. So as I walk away I see one of the ticket girls and say I just missed out bummer and then for some reason I say “Go the All Blacks!” She looks at me and says “just you!” I nod, she grabs my hand pulls me through the crowd and gives me this ticket and says “we will get you next time” and winks. So sweet I am in! I look at the map and walk as fast as I can to the Mona Lisa as I figure I don’t have much time and I better see that. I make it Yus!! I take some pictures of it then a nice couple ask me if I will take picture of them, so then they took a picture of me perfect!! So now I am done legs burning as I sit at the hotel….. We are coming here next year I want to show you that lock! Xxx Ooo20120927-205704.jpg20120927-205731.jpg

Good Thing Bad Thing | Dave Jack, International man of Mystery

Dave Jack has been away for a month today. Obviously this is not ideal when you have a family but you have to look on the bright side.

  • Good thing: Dave has been to Frankfurt, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, Lyon, Grenoble, Paris and Zurich has just been added to his itinery.
  •  Bad thing: I am so happy for him and proud of him but if I’m going to be honest I am also insanely envious.
  • Good thing: we are coping fine
  •  Bad thing: I know Dave has had some bad spells of homesickness
  • Good thing: I have kept myself busy while he has been gone
  •  Bad thing: mostly this has been with shopping $$$$
  • Good thing: Dave has bought us lots of lovely presents
  • Bad thing: these presents include a commemorative ABBA plate

Cook | Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe

I found this recipe on another NZ blog Monkey Makes Three  and it was perfect for a 9pm chocolate craving.  Lonely nights with Dave away just make me want to eat arggghhh.  And cook.  I think about cooking all the time.
Any way, back to the recipe.  I realise I may be a bit late to the party with mug cakes but how cool is a mug cake party any way?  Mum reckons it comes out like a steamed pudding, can’t say I’ve eaten too many of those but it’s a good quick fix for those lacking in chocolate supplies!

Serves 2

4 tbsp plain flour
4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp cocoa
1 egg
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp oil
3-4 tbsp dark chocolate chips
dash of vanilla

– Mix the dry ingredients together.

– Mix in the egg, milk, oil and vanilla. Stir in the chocolate chips.

– Evenly distribute mixture between 2 cups.

– Cook in the microwave on high for 2 minutes. Tip into a bowl and eat.

Saturday Love

Ethan is at a birthday party, there is nothing I HAVE to do right at this moment so I am listening to my favourite music loud {Modest Mouse, Built to Spill & Death Cab for Cutie, The Flaming Lips}, working on posts and trying not to check the time!  I have been looking forward to this little bit of ‘me’ time all week and it’s lovely.

New Laundry Cupboards

Loving our new jumbo laundry cupboards that are finally taking shape, can’t wait until this part of the house is finished and we can use all of our new storage.

Salad for lunch…..again!

I eat salad for lunch every day, not the same salad, I change it up, but I never get sick of it.  Lashings of mayo mixed with hot sauce, avo, egg, tomato, celery and tuna today.

Postcards from Dave

We received some postcards from Dave in the mail this week.  I bet the teacher had a laugh at the Frankfurt postcard when Ethan took them to school for news!  His trip has just been extended to well over 40 days now, Zurich after Paris and then home finally!  Can. Not. Wait.

Nectarine Blossoms

Mum bought this gorgeous nectarine tree for our yard, now every spring we will have beautiful blossoms like our neighbours!

Maths Certificates

After only two lessons at Number Works Ethan has received not one but two certificates in maths from School.  He has never received a maths certificate before.  Ever.

Amazing aye?  Just goes to show that it wasn’t anything other than confidence.  He didn’t think he could do it so he didn’t.  So proud of him.

I am LOVING this tip I found on pinterest.  To clean silver, line a bowl with tinfoil, add 1/2 cup salt and 1/2 cup baking soda, fill with hot water and soak silver for 30 minutes.  I have a metric shit-tonne of silver jewellery and this method cleaned the lot with ease!  Amazing.

Ethan no longer co-operates when I want to take 3 million pics so I have to be sneaky.  I’m having fun with this.

Backyard Fishing

Ethan Fishing

Saturday morning, 7.15 am.  The sun was shining.  It was time to fish for catfish.  He has never been a fan of Saturday morning cartoons that boy.

Online |

A couple of weeks ago when many people I know were revelling in their fashion week goody-bag bounty, I received a wee bounty of my own; a Mummy Blogger Bounty.  Cleaning supplies! I was actually very stoked, that stuff is expensive.

This lovely surprise was to promote a new website aimed at helping to get the whole family involved in chores.  A miracle website, or just a fun online dashboard to help get the whole family to do ‘their bit’ – either way it’s worth a look. isn’t trying to re-invent the wheel, we all know that there is no magic trick to get unwilling kids to do chores, but this is a cute online game which Mums and Dads can use to , at the very least, teach kids HOW to do the required chores correctly.  This is one of the features I like a lot; once you have registered your family you can choose to add chores from a pre-poulated list, or you can customise your own task.  When a task is selected for completion, there is a ‘How To’ option detailing what is required and the equipment needed.  No more excuses for half-finished chores!  I like it.

Ethan is amped to get into it and start earning points towards a reward (which you can also customise).  The interface is very kid friendly and I really think the concept may help transition some kids from being passive mess-makers to active participants in household chores.  Some kids and households don’t need gimmicks to do what should be done, but others will definitely be wanting to give this a go.

Please share if your family has a fool-proof chore system, I would LOVE to hear about it!

Check out my little Home Hero, so cute!

Acquisitions | Blue Illusion Minola Flats

Blue Illusion is an Australian retail store that I have just noticed in NZ {I don’t know how long they have been here!}.  The clothes are not for me, but they had some gorgeous shoes and hats, and I just couldn’t resist these little flats.

The leather is buttery soft, the colours are vibrant and fun and they are SO comfortable.  I’m really picky about flats as I don’t think the typical round toe is the most flattering style but these gems have a squared off toe that looks amaze.
