Enough & More. 10 Years of Marriage

Last night I got really, shitty, stabby, pissed off & annoyed at Dave.  He had cooked and served up an awesome dinner, beautiful chicken taco salads, and as we were cleaning up I noticed the avocado.

It wasn’t really an avocado – more so the remnants of one.  Half an avocado that had been meticulously sliced and portioned and arranged artfully on our salads and Ethan’s taco’s.  Except there was one slice left.

What the hell?

Who serves up half an avocado and leaves one sliver left in the skin?  Were you really going to save this Dave?  Wrap it in glad-wrap and put it back in the fridge, only to open it again and spread that last sliver on quarter of a cracker?

Oh my god this irritated me beyond any sensible, rational bounds.  It wasn’t a once off, this happens all the time in our kitchen.  Dave will serve some peas and leave 5 peas in the bowl.  F I V E.  The reason?  He already had enough on his plate.  This was also the reasoning behind the orphaned avocado sliver; the perfect amount was already on our plates.  We had enough.  No more was needed.

I cooled my jets and got over being annoyed, but caught myself thinking about the silly situation this morning as we celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary.

Enough and More is the odd dichotomy that typifies our decade together as husband and wife.  A wonderful, amazing 10 years that have blessed us with many things, most importantly our two incredible boys.

Dave is enough.  He lives and breathes Enough.  He is always happy, always satisfied, always at the perfect level of psychological homeostasis, never wanting, never coveting, always seeking balance and just enough.

I am More.  Always pushing, driving, trying harder, needing to win, be the best, have More.  Dreaming big, setting lofty goals and ideals for everyone, getting more out of today than yesterday.

Dave had portioned out enough avocado, I would have added more.

I think these individual idiosyncrasies and difference in focus, plus our unwavering commitment to the success of our marriage is what makes us such a great team.  I personally am going to take a leaf out of Dave’s book over the next 10 years and start practicing Enough.  Because I already have more blessings than I deserve.

I love you so much Dave Jack, thank you for proposing, marrying and moving to the other side of the earth with me.  Thank you for the best 10 years I could ever have imagined and putting up with some of my worst days and helping me through them.  You are the most kind, generous and loving man any family could wish for and such a perfect example for your two little boys.

Thank you xx.

2015. Start as you mean to continue

2015 Resolutions Mummy Blog NZ

We’re not quite at the post-Christmas, New Year reflection period yet, but 2014 has been such a great year for me that I’m eager to keep the momentum going and launch into 2015 feeling focused, motivated and goal-directed. This requires a little thinking about what I want to achieve and how I’m going to get there.
I’ve used the four pillars of health identified by Sovereign as; exercise, eating well, sleep and happiness as my starting point for this wee introspective exercise that will hopefully set me on the right path to achieving my personal goals in 2015.

Fitting this is first as it’s something I’m tackling  immediately in the New Year.  Training is underway for my first ever Triathlon!  Yes.  Running.  Swimming.  Cycling.  All in a row.  In one day.

So, I’m feeling good about everything except the cycle.  I don’t have a road bike so have been training on my mountain bike which is not ideal but it has wheels!  Looking further ahead, I need some yoga in my life and am hoping to achieve a touch more balance when Nixon eventually stops breastfeeding and becomes less dependant upon me in the evenings.  This will free me up to schedule some evening classes a couple of times a week and place more value on what I need to do for my body.

Lets just clear the air here;  living on cashews and dates is just not for me, in fact it is so far from me it’s never, e v e r  going to happen.  I like food and I like cooking and I LOVE butter, bacon, chocolate and wine way to much to partake in any raw eating diet.  That said, I am invested in healthy, moderate eating.  There are a few tweaks to be made in 2015;

  1. Increase my daily water intake dramatically – somedays I only take in 500mls!  Eeek
  2. Reduce alcohol consumption
  3. Increase green, alkaline veges
  4. Eliminate my daily chocolate habit
  5. Celebrate guilt free eating and enjoyment of ALL food, when the occasion arises.

Lord, this one’s the easiest.  My husband and I must start going to bed earlier.  Not just landing into the actual bed, but beginning our sleep routine earlier; brushing teeth, getting the dogs settled, taking vitamins {+ in my case medication}, face cleansing routine, reading, playing on the phones………for how long?  Right.  Everything needs to kick off much earlier so we can eliminate this lights off at 11.35pm business.

This one’s the deal breaker; I want 2015 to be the year of happiness.  This year I quit an unfulfilling job that was stressing me out and eating in to my family time.  Since then, I have been able to focus so much more energy on building my own brand via my blog and just simply writing.  This makes me happy and it is this route to happiness that I intend to chase throughout the year in 2015.

I also want to focus more on relationships; building those that matter to me, working hard on investing in quality family life and recognizing those friends that lift me up and make my heart sing.

So, obviously this is no list of resolutions but a fairly fast & loose road map of how I plan to tackle the year ahead.

#LifeTakeCharge, who’s with me?

Mummy Dilemma #77: Do I need to go to the doctor?

I suffer from hideous seasonal allergies, usually resulting in massive sneezing fits but in particular it’s my eyes that are getting hammered this year. I’ve been making it worse by rubbing them when I get stressed and tired {which is a lot at the moment} and have woken up on numerous occasions over the past two weeks with a completely bloodshot, icky and crusty eye.
So, being the thrifty and time poor mummy that I am, I have tried antihistamines, ClearEyes, cold compresses…..and then I remembered that Nixon had been prescribed some antibiotic eye drops when he was a baby. I of course threw caution to the wind and have been self-medicating, not a thought to the fact that I was dropping expired medicine into my eyeballs! Pfffttt.
As long as I don’t have to go to the doctors office right? I would actually prefer to drop meths in my eyes then go to the doctor’s office with Nixon.
There are approximately 10 million pot plants in the waiting room, all in various stages of dehydration, making their pots perfect, lightweight baby bowling balls. There are about 103 shitty, germy old toys that Nixon thinks he loves more than he loves his brother, toys guaranteed to invoke instant tantrums the second you even motion towards the door to leave. There are also at least 3 hacking cough-ers, 2 grumpy seniors and one toddler who is primed to take an instant dislike to Nixon and any possibility of sharing the beloved toys.
You feel me? You’d stay home and use expired eye drops too right?
Tell me I’m not the only one.

A Sunday Catch-up

After the mega marathon that was the 12 Days of Christmas giveaway, I am SO excited to return to regular blogging!  Playing Santa was nice but it appears there are hordes of professional prizewinners in New Zealand at the moment, who are in to win errrything.  I hope some people won our prizes who genuinely wanted them or have little people to gift them to.  Thank you SO much to everyone who visited, and perhaps discovered this blog through the giveaways, 2015 is going to be a big year for the Best Nest and I’m so glad to have you all on board!

PS.  This is totally NOT me getting back to regular blogging, more like a brain-dump and a virtual wave to my old blogging friends!

  • I know you’ve been on the edge of your seats with worry but……. My hair has been raised from the dead!  Yes I know everyone’s hair is technically dead, so maybe I should re-phrase, my hair has been saved from a mega-chop by my sensational hair dresser.  Knowing a full colour would help with the damage, but knowing I wouldn’t want to lose my ombré hair, she and another stylist applied a clear coat colour to my whole head, and then after a myriad of treatments and a small trim to get rid of the breakage I can now run my fingers through my hair again!  Indeed a Christmas miracle.  Jade at Servilles Albany is most definitely an angel x
  • Feeling unusually virtuous this morning, I harvested some spinach and silverbeet from our vege garden and whipped up a healthy green juice with some pear, ginger, pineapple and a few strawberries.  It was the most revolting juice I have ever made in my life!  I have never experienced such a juice cock-up before and fully paid for it.  Had to have some nice white bread toast with lashings of butter and avocado on it to get the putrid taste out of my mouth :::::shudder:::::
  • We had a shared, family Christmas yesterday which could have turned a bit sour with personal grievances on all sides (aka Family Drama – that’s the nicest way I can think to put it?) but everyone played nice and the food was ahhh-mazing!  Particularly special was seeing Nixon lean in not once but twice to give my awesome Pop some very smoochy good-bye kisses as we left.

Poppa and Nixon

  • I may be the only person in Auckland who’s stoked it’s raining, but water in my tank = $$$ in the bank!
  • I went mental buying Christmas gifts for Nixon.  I realised this as I was wrapping everything this week.  So mental that I, serial over-gifter that I am, actually culled the gifts and we are now are set for his 2nd birthday as well as Christmas!  Dave is both shocked at my shopping prowess and stupefied at my new found sensibility on the gift count.  Just goes to show that after 10 years of marriage you cans till surprise your partner!
  • I requested and received the most obnoxious Christmas manicure this morning, Whore of Babylon Red Santa Red and Gold Glitter.  It’s actually hilarious and I kinda love it!

Runna Mini Bike New Zealand

Today we are so excited to have this amazing Runna Mini Bike to giveaway. One lucky child is going to be grinning from ear to ear come Christmas morning!

If you’re not already aware of the huge benefits that balance bikes give our kids – they teach young children to gain balance, maintain control and build confidence quickly. But more importantly balance bikes remove the need for training wheels allowing your child to progress straight to a two wheeled pedal bike.

Until now these benefits have only been available for children 3 years and over – but not anymore. This amazing bike starts off as a 3 wheeled trike this can get your 12 to 18 month toddler on their first set of wheels. Then from 18 months it will convert to a two wheel balance bike at just the perfect height to get all the benefits of a balance bike.

Then from 2.5 years on they move to the full size balance bike Then on to their first pedal bike to complete the evolution from walking to riding.
