Saturday / Sunday

We tried to cram as much as possible into this weekend – it was busy but it was fun.

Saturday morning began with soccer – it was a white-wash with Ethan scoring our teams only goal, but what a goal it was; he had the throw in, chased it and scored!  No-one else even touched the ball…..ahhh preschool sports are hilarious!

The we had a visit from Abby, Jesse and Riley.  It was such a pretty day, we had so much fun playing outside.  I loved it because I played with Riley heaps, something I have not been able to do yet.

After lunch we headed over to Debbie and Nicks where I washed my car (we are on tank water so I made good use of their city supply), and Dave got busy with the chainsaw and chopped some firewood for the fam.  It was awesome for Ethan to have some QT with Freya, they haven’t had a good play for ages and they played with their ‘puppies’ and played restaurants for ages it was lovely;

God I love these two together, they are so sweet to each other, but funny and silly and neither of them takes any crap from the other – fiery springs to mind!  To top off a lovely visit, we had the first BBQ of the non-winter season, it was awesome as per usual at The Rhodes house.

Today we popped out of bed and headed outside to deal with the playhouse.  Dave laid new decking where there was none, added a safety rail (it’s a very high playhouse!), built a new ladder, and I put safety mesh where there was none and began cleaning the inside.  It is so awesome!  Ethan had the best day.  When I pulled out the play kitchen and we saw everything needed a wash, I gave him a bucket of water and told him to get to work.  I think this was his favourite part of the day – washing the dishes for his new house.  Needless to say, when we knocked off work at 5pm a soak in the hot-tub and a well earned cocktail were in order!  Ethan also anointed himself Chicken Whisperer.  After seeing his Daddy catch the chicken yesterday, he chased chickens all day and was so proud when he climbed back up the hill with a fat chicken in his hands!

The Most Shi Tzu-ish Cake Ever

Ethan and I didn’t go out looking for an ugly cake to buy Dave for his birthday, but lo and behold we found one anyway. We were picking up some things for the birthday dinner and Ethan spotted Louie in cake form! Although he was missing his requisite orange sweater, the likeness is uncanny, and Ethan knew his daddy would be totally stoked on a chocolate log decorated to look like a chocolate dog (I think one of the bakers at Pak n Save might be one of the 3 readers of my blog!!).

So Dave requested a modest birthday dinner of chicken burgers, fries and ice cream. I aim to please, so instead of chicken patties as he was expecting I splashed out on $20 worth of chicken breast [ouch] and whipped up the following marinade

In a bowl combine hideously expensive chicken with

* the rest of the bottle of Worcestershire sauce

* splash of dark soy sauce

* garlic

* Italian herbs

* frsh ground black pepper

* splash of Mrs. Balls hot Chili Chutney

Ta Da! Cook each breast in a hot iron skillet, and serve as part of a build-your-own-burger buffet line. I had fresh kaiser rolls, homemade beetroot chutney, the standard sauces, avocado mash, bacon, brie, cheddar, tomatoes and lettuce, coleslaw and potato wedges. So good, I could barely waddle around the kitchen to serve the desert dog!

Happy birthday Dave, we love you so much xxxx

Stuff White People Like #126 Vespa Scooters

I may not drive a Prius (though I would if Toyota needed me to test drive one for a year or so!) and my car does not run on recycled vegetable oil, but I can say that I have been the proud owner of a motor scooter.

As the astute observers at SWPL have noted, I am a stereotypical white person so it should come as no surprise that I have dreamed of owning a vespa at numerous points throughout my adult life.  A vespa for me is kinda like a Ford F350 truck, it would be cool but it’s not going to happen.  But something else happened and its name was Honda.  It’s colour was blue, it was mostly made of plastic, it was born in 1984 and cost $2.49 to fill up – there was nothing not to love.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Bush and I drove cross country from Jacksonville, FL to ‘California’.  I say it like that because we had no idea where we were going, we were just ‘moving to California’.  We arrived in Encinitas eventually found a place and got jobs etc.  I had no license as I forgot to renew my visa about 5.5 years before, so getting a vehicle was going to be tricky.  Luckily my friend Pat worked at the car lot I walked or cycled past every day on the way to and from the garden centre where I worked.  My new Mexican work mates assured me it was no big deal to get a car (or other vehicle) without a licence and they were right!  Pat hooked me up and I was soon the proud owner of a 1984 Honda Elite.  It was a little out of my price range, but Pat and his manager were able to finance me for the whopping price of $300.  I didn’t think life could get any better.  Dave didn’t have a car either at this point, so the scooter gave us so much freedom, but not from each other, we still did everything together.  Grocery shopping was fun, a little uncomfortable by the time we got home as I had to carry all of the groceries in  a backpack, skateboarding was more fun, the scooter had a little luggage rack at the back so we were able to strap the skateboards on, but surfing before work was the most fun of all.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 SCOOT by you.Bush would drive to the beach with our boards in her truck and I would cruise down in my wettie on the scoot-scoot.  Encinitas didn’t know what had hit it.

I continued to ride the scooter well into my pregnancy with Ethan, until the bumps at the bottom of Moonlight Hill got WAY to much for a chick in her third trimester.

Everyone was down with the scooter, people were stoked when I would let them borrow it.  I mean, who was I to hold back if they were picking up more classy vodka such as Popov or Wolfschmidt for Bush and I?

Even Dave’s friends who would visit from out of town loved the scooter,MP 001 by you. check out pro-skater Kyle getting amongst the scoot with Dave Jack, he won $10,000 the day before in a skate contest but all he wanted to do was ride the scooter of style.

I had only one treacherous moment when driving the scooter.  We had cleaned out a shed at work and I found an awesome Jerry Garcia painting done in oils that we HAD to have for apartment in Tortilla Flats.  I was quite sure that if I rested one corner of the painting on the foot peg and tied the back end up with some garden string I could get Jerry home in one piece.  I was wrong – Moonlight Hill struck again and Jerry fell off and it was all quite traumatic but I eventually made my way back to the spanish ghetto where we lived and Bush loved him!

The scooter represents everything wonderful about out time in Encinitas, that easy, carefree time before we were parents, before we had bills, when all we had to worry about was whether we were having fish or chicken tacos for dinner.  The little blue beauty never broke down, never gave us a lick of trouble and I would buy another Honda Elite again in a heartbeat.

Project 365 * Day 8:Dave comes home!……… with bourbon!

OK so we all know by now that MELISSA & ETHAN ARE SICK, I know I feel sorry for me too. But the week of lonely Jacks just ended and Dave is back. Everything is as it should be, the filthy-farm-shi-tzu is sleeping on the leather couch, Ethan can’t take his eyes off his Daddy and there is a mountain of laundry waiting for me. Drink up sisters, Daddy’s home!

Soccer & Dogs

Ethan is mad on soccer at the moment and Nana surprised him today with two brand spanking new Nike soccer balls – one for our house and one for hers.  He was so excited to get home and have a game with his Dad.  Lucky for us the new front lawn is huge and flat so just perfect for the New Zealand vs.. America matches that are going to ensue!  The afternoon got even better when I remembered that cousin Jake had given Ethan two pairs of soccer boots that he had grown out of, one of which was a perfect fit!  We are now waiting on an email back from the coach of the local kindergarten soccer team to find out if they room for a new player, can’t wait!

Lou used to love playing soccer and was awesome on defence, but this new fancy ball has him running scared as he can see his reflection in it and refuses to touch the thing – looks like Dave’s soccer team is falling to pieces as Scooby is not much on the field either!

The new house has so much more room, Ethan has his own arts and crafts area that he doesn’t have to pack up each day – he loves it

This is where Louie spends much of the day, he loves the view!  Even when he is inside he often lays on our bed so he can admire the view and dream of those dastardly chickens that are just over that little wire fence……

Gumboots are compulsory footwear at this time of year, it has been raining on and off pretty much every day for 2 weeks now, but as you can see there are long fine breaks and my washing got dry on the line today!

043Such good form already!  I think Dave is secretly so pleased that Ethan has taken to soccer over rugby as that is what he used to play as a kid in Florida.

Oskar and Stella are on holiday with Old Nan and Old Pop (Ethan’s names – they help him keep track of all of his Nanas!) so we popped over for lunch on Monday and the kids had a blast catching up and having fun;

Good Friday

We had a working bee at Mum and Dads on Good Friday and helped spread the dumptruck-load of mulch through the orchard.  When we arrived the Easter Bunny aka Nana, had just been and dropped off a sweet stash of easter eggs and awesome goodies;

Jack stuff

To pass the last couple of days before Dave came home, Ethan and I went to stay at Mum and Dads house, where all of the puppies and Ethan had so much fun despite a cough and cold!
