Say hello! Qwerky Home + Giveaway

Say hello! Qwerky Home + Giveaway

Yay another Monday and another awesome Mum to introduce you all to!  Mummy Blog New Zealand

I’ve only connected with Leigh-ann from Qwerky Home over the past 48 hours and to be honest it’s been a flurry of emails back and forth as we threw this feature together but…….gosh, if this woman isn’t as lovely, positive, excited and as fun in real life as she comes across via email I would be so surprised!  And let’s be honest, how difficult must it be to sound lovely, positive, excited and as fun when you have three kids and you’re probably typing one email in multiple shifts while standing up with a cereal bowl in one hand, dirty laundry under an arm and someone tugging at your leg?

In her own words;

I’m Leigh-ann, and I’m married to my wonderful husband and we have three children aged 4, 5 and 6. Life is pretty hectic! My husband is in the military which has meant a fair bit of moving and lots of time apart. It was really important to us that I stayed home with our children while they were preschoolers, and the older they got, the more I realised that I wanted to be able to work around their school hours to be available to help out at school, go to sports days and assemblies and to be home if they need me. With my husband’s job, I needed a career that fit around school hours and school holidays as I can’t rely on my husband to be around all the time. Having a business at home works perfectly with all of that, although sometimes it would be nice to go out to work and leave it all there at home time! I was a counsellor before we had children, so this is a big shift for me and I’m learning all the time. I love it though!

1.  Which came first the business or the babes?

Bebes! I had three children under three and a military husband. We got posted up to Ohakea and built a house and then I realised that I was bored – three children and two house builds in four years left me restless when I didn’t have a project on the go! I started to think about doing more training either in my previous profession as a counsellor, or in interior design when my first business (dorothy nada) popped up. Less than a year later, the opportunity to purchase Qwerky Home appeared and I grabbed it. Who needs sleep anyway? 😉

2.  Doing double-duty being your own boss and a Mum is hard! How do you manage your time so you’re not constantly working?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha *catches breath*, ha ha ha ha ha.

Ummm….yeah. I’m constantly working.

3.  Your site is full of bright, fun colours which I love, what’s your view on the scandi-monochrome trend we’re seeing in interiors?

I LOVE the whole scandi-monochrome thing. I think that if I wasn’t obsessed with colour I’d be totally into it. I have HUGE admiration for people who have children who can carry it off in their homes – my house is colourful, vibrant and LOUD! Sometimes I dream of a calm, subtle room to hide out in, but then I think that I’d end up throwing colour at it anyway. I love to look at the current trend, but I just can’t imagine living in it.

4.  What is your favourite item in store right now?

Glass Greenhouse Interior Mum Blog New ZealandI love the glass greenhouse. It’s a slightly off-beat take on the terraniums that are around at the moment. Just gorgeous!

5.  Does life even exist offline anymore?  What’s your take on incorporating social media into your business plan?

Social media pretty much IS my business plan! With 2 businesses and a blog, I feel like I’m always on facebook or instagram. It’s such a great way of getting immediate access to your customers (or potential customers) and building a real relationship with them. It’s a bit like an online version of your friendly local shopkeeper. I love that aspect of it! The only downside is that sometimes people expect you to be available 24/7, and with a young family (now aged 4, 5, and 6), that’s just not possible.

Because Leigh-ann is just so awesome this weeks Say hello! winner will be able to choose between two amaze prizes!

Thou shalt not judge my parenting on Mondays

Thou shalt not judge my parenting on Mondays

Nix turns two in 2 months and he’s all about the tantrums.  All.  The.  Time.

I can deal with this just fine, however, a grande mal paddy sometimes causes a bit of a time crunch when you are trying to leave the house by 9.30am.  God that sounded like eons of time once in my life – getting on your way and in the car by 9.30?  pfffftttt, nothing to it.  Now I’m on struggle street with such an ‘early’ departure, I hate it.

Anyway, swimming at 10am + a multiple paddy morning = frazzled mama.  I realized about halfway to the class that I had failed to pack Nix any swimming togs.  I had a disposable swim nappy so that would have to suffice.  But the LOOKS!  I was officially deemed ‘that’ mother in the eyes of my peers, the instructor was quite horrified  and every time I launched Nix out of the pool with gay abandon all eyes followed his nappy clothed, swimming trunk-less bottom as if at any time it was going to blow!

We survived the lesson and in the creepy silence of the changing room where no-one talks to each other, the Mum next to me began cursing under her breath.  My swimming togs faux pas was trumped by a forgotten bra!  My worst nightmare.  It was obviously Monday-itis all round.

We emerged from our joyous time in the chlorine and headed to the mall to pick up a few things.  Much like taking Nixon to a restaurant, taking him shopping is also an exercise in speed, distraction and mostly just speed.  He hates being confined to his stroller with a passion.  A very loud and vocal passion.  When I saw there was no line at my $10 eyebrow waxing joint I made an executive decision – we were going in, stroller and all.  I handed Nix my phone {breaking parenting rule #71 right?}, found him some videos of himself to watch and told the beautician it was Go Time – we had a ticking time bomb on our hands.  She was totally the mistress of speedy wax jobs and I headed on my way, ready to brave the mall, with the addition of bright red waxing marks on my face. Such a babe.

It was then a caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and learnt a hard lesson; my trackies may be from Country Rd, but this does not make them fit for wearing in public.  One word, pajamas.

So I was feeling really pumped up as we hit Kmart (not) and there were signs that Nixon was rapidly descending into shit-losing-mode.  I found The Wiggles on Spotify and pumped it up to full volume and handed him my phone again, I know I know!  I skipped the ‘trendy’ homewares section and powered through to the boys clothes department.  Nix needed some winter play clothes so I wasn’t leaving until I had them.

By the time we left the shoes, it was all over.  Back arched, screams at mega-decibel level, I ran to the check-out only stopping to demonstrate my next display of uber parenting – I grabbed a Kit Kat and a juice bottle and said ‘have at it kiddo’ {Breaking parenting rule #3 I’m pretty sure}.  I had bought myself enough time to pay for the clothes, and power my way through another store to pick up Mum’s Mother’s Day gift.

So yeah.  Monday.  As I said to the bra-less mother at swimming, “it can only get better from here right?”.

The Lipstick Project. One Week Later.

The Lipstick Project. One Week Later.

Who would have thought that seven days and some lipstick could bring about a total change in the way I feel about my age, my face, makeup and of course the combination of all three!  If you missed the first post, catch up here.Beauty Blogger New Zealand Karen Murrell Lipstick

I feel like I had to ‘grow into’ lipstick.  Previous attempts at wearing it simply left me feeling a bit like an imposter of myself, like I was all dressed up and pretending to be something I wasn’t.  Wearing lipstick made me feel self-conscious and awkward and therefore got put in the too-hard basket and moved firmly off the make-up menu, never to return again.  Until now.

Obviously I was super fortunate to have been gifted so many beautiful shades for this project, it made the decision of what colour to wear so much fun and a dynamic addition to my day that possessed the possibility to lift my mood or change how I was feeling about my outfit or how I looked.  Colour is a powerful thing, and adding colour to my face immediately took my eyes away from the wrinkles that I don’t like and the blemishes and niggly imperfections that I would normally focus on.  The effect was so transforming that I found with the addition of lipstick, I actually wore less makeup throughout the week, even heading out multiple times with simply lipstick and a swipe of mascara on!

I quickly found that some tones appealed to me more than others. Pinks seemed not to work with my colouring, whereas I naturally gravitated toward the orange and red tones.  One of my lovely Insta friends has suggested that a blue-based red would probably work well for me with my blue eyes.  Karen Murrell’s 20th shade, True Love, is a blue-based red so I am looking forward to trying this colour in the future and putting colour theory to the test!

Beauty Blogger New Zealand Karen Murrell LipstickI have definitely found my favourites; from L-R – Magenta Moon, Violet Mousse, Cordovan Natural, Coral Dawn, Pink Starlet {recently named as the top selling lipstick in New Zealand pharmacies!} and Rymba Rhythm.  I was really impressed with the staying power of the Karen Murrell line.  One of my newbie lipstick questions was how often would I have to reapply, and while the answer does depend on what you are eating and drinking, I found that really I wasn’t fussing over my lipstick all the live-long day.  Thank goodness!  I will be looking for a naturally colored lip liner to prevent bleeding and fill in my lips before applying as some of the more lightly pigmented shades definitely called for this.  Any tips or recommendations on this would be much appreciated!  These all natural, cruelty free lipsticks are truly beautiful.  I’m in love with the packaging, the quality formula and pigment, the taste is ridiculously delicious and they make me feel like a babe.  That’s the most important thing right?
I think the most surprising thing about The Lipstick Project was the response from you guys.  I never imagined that there were so many other lipstick virgins out there!  If you’re thinking of branching out, being brave and dabbling with some colour I would definitely recommend a trip to your local beauty counter and having a look at some testers or getting advice from one of the counter staff, even enlisting help from a girlfriend who has a few different shades in her collection should help you find a palette you’re comfortable with and feel good wearing.  At least knowing whether you’re looking for a pink, a red or a natural shade should make things a little less overwhelming when trying to choose a lip colour.

Karen Murrell’s top tips for lipstick application

  1. Exfoliate: buff away any dry skin.  This step doesn’t need to be complicated; a little cleanser onto your lips with a flannel in the shower works well.
  2. Apply lip liner if you like a more defined line.
  3. Apply lipstick with your finger – because all Karen Murrell Natural Lipsticks use natural pigment using your fingers helps to lock colour into your lips.
  4. Avoid blotting with tissue as this can create tissue ball residue on the lips and remove vital oils that create shine on the lips.
  5. If you smudge your lipstick during application, run over the edge with a cotton bud or use a lip brush over the lipstick.
  6. To apply brighter lipstick shades to your lips, use your fingers to press in the colour. The heat of your fingers fixes the pigment onto your lips and creates a more natural finish.
  7. Your lips look fuller when you dab lipstick in the centre of your mouth and blend it out with your finger. Then press lips together to refresh colour.

To shop these beautiful Karen Murrell Natural Lipsticks visit the online store or head to the stockists page to find a store near you.

And look, I know there are many, many more important things than an in depth discussion on whether one wears lippy or not, but self-love is totally important, as is trying new things and refusing to get stuck in a mummy-rut.  The past seven days have helped me branch out a little, try something new and to discover that a change is as good as a holiday – even if the change is only one, tiny detail like adding lipstick to your morning routine xx

Yesterday I turned 36. Ok.  I’m cool, just had to let that sink in for a minute. Having 2 kids with an 8.5 year age gap means that the four of us often go in different directions. If Ethan has a rugby game and it’s
